Bonheur reputation as an animal painter and sculptor grew in the 1840s, with many of his works on display at the prestigious Paris Saloon from 1841 to 1853. Scholars believe that there is an exhibition of the 1849 “Plow in Nivarneis”, now a government commission located in France. Musee Nationale du Chateau de Fontainebleau, established him as a professional artist. In 1853, Bonhauer gained international acclaim with his painting “The Horse Fair”, which depicted the horse market in Paris. As one of his most famous works, the painting is on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
